Symptoms of Tonsillitis

Some Common Symptoms of Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis starts with a sore throat, where a patient has difficulty in swallowing. The glandular tissue in your throat called tonsils get so swelled that you have difficulty in not only swallowing your food but also liquids. The tonsils are enlarged and white blood cells (WBC) get accumulated on them which help you to fight of any infections that enter your body through your nostrils or your mouth. This accumulation of WBC and pus on your tonsils is one of the most common symptoms of tonsillitis. But it is not the only one.

Some other additional symptoms of tonsillitis are bad breath, which is caused by accumulation of pus and WBC on the heads of your tonsils. You might try to fight off this foul breath by using mints or rinsing your mouth several times a day but it is of little use. The reason is that the root of your bad breath is not your teeth but the culprit is hidden further deep in your throat. When the tonsils grow a person might snore or have difficulty breathing while lying down. Your tonsils become red and swollen. Another one of the most common symptoms of tonsillitis is fever, which might not go down. The patient may get severe headaches from time to time. You may have nasal congestions. Since all our sinuses are interconnected swollen tonsils also cause your ears and neck to hurt. They lymph nodes of the neck also swell up, and they hurt when made contact with. Most of the patients also complain of dry throat and tongue. Due to this dehydrated state and difficulty in swallowing the voice of a patient also becomes hoarse.

Tonsillitis may be caused due to viral or bacterial infections. Most of the symptoms of tonsillitis go away even without taking any medicines. Howeve,r in case of a bacterial infection patient might suffer from repeated episodes of tonsillitis. In such a case your tonsils stop functioning. Their main function is to fight off infections which enter your body and you might get ill frequently. If this is the case you should seek medical advice promptly. If your doctor tells you that your tonsils are not helping in fighting off any infections and should be removed, think twice! Removing your tonsils means removing a part of your immune system. You should instead try natural remedies which help you in fighting tonsillitis effectively and with no side effects.

If not treated properly the bacteria can spread and turn into rheumatic fever. If you have a bacterial infection your doctor may generally prescribe antibiotics, but this is not necessary. The bacterial infections are more intense and the patient shows more symptoms then in case of a viral infection. The symptoms of tonsillitis in case of a viral infection may be very similar to common cold. In this case there is no need to take antibiotics. The infection wards off in its own time.  However, in such a case home remedies such as warm liquids, herbal teas, sucking on lozenges and popsicles all provide relief to the sore throat and also take care of the dryness in your throat.

Tonsillitis Symptoms

Identifying the Basic Signs

If anyone has bacteria or virus or any other tonsillitis symptoms it can be both disturbing and painful. Tonsillitis is a contagious disease and can affect you when a number of microorganisms such as herpes simplex virus or other virus enter your system. It can also be caused by bacteria such as those belonging to the streptococcus group or those from the pneumonia genera enter your body through your nostrils or mouth. These bacteria can make their way into your body, if you have been in contact with someone suffering from the disease or if you were around them in closed, crowded spaces.

Your nasal cavity and mouth work like the entrance points of these bacteria. They are both connected to your throat, where your tonsils are located. The tonsils have white blood cells in them which fight any sort of infection which enters your body. As the infection enters your body the WBCs start their work and as a result your tonsils are strained. As the tonsils swell up tonsillitis symptoms start to show. The first symptom is off course in inflamed throat. The patient experiences difficulty in swallowing and the throat feels dry and itchy.

Fever along with sore throat is one of the most common and well known tonsillitis symptoms. Depending upon the severity of the infection, a person shows some other signs as well. It is not necessary that all the patients show all the signs, but some of the common tonsillitis symptoms include; hoarseness in the patient’s voice, red swollen tonsils with patches of pus on them.  Bad breath often results from the accumulation of pus. The white patches on the tonsils can be either accumulation of white blood cells or pus or at times both. Another common symptom is either a nasal congestion or a runny nose. Some people have difficulty in breathing. Some complain of stiff neck, while some patients may complain of sore eyes.

Tonsillitis is often cured on its own, if you have a strong immune system. Some over the counter medicines can be used in case of a viral infection to provide relief from accompanying symptoms of tonsillitis. In this case no antibiotics are given to the patients, but if the root of your tonsillitis is a bacterial infection doctors prescribe antibiotic medicine. They help in fighting the bacteria within 2 to 3 days and all the other symptoms also vanish. Sometimes a person’s immune system gets week and as a result, whenever this person gets any new bacteria or virus in their system the result is swollen tonsils. In such cases; after giving repeated doses of antibiotics, doctors advice to go for tonsil removal surgery or tonsillectomy. The fact is that repeated doses of antibiotics reduce their effectiveness and tonsillectomy is not a good option either as removing your tonsils simply means you remove the initial disease fighting organ of your body. Instead, opting for natural remedies to fight tonsillitis at the first sign of tonsillitis symptoms is a much smarter option; as it has no side effects and is definitely more effective then what your doctors may prescribe.
